Riverside heritage restoration
Oakhampton Road, Maitland
"Riverview" is a locally listed heritage home on the Hunter River that, over its long life, has been modified many times — serving as a hospital and later converted into two flats. Our proposal returns it to its original purpose as a single family home, removing the unsympathetic changes made during its institutional years so the original house can read clearly again.
The owners needed a four-bedroom family home, which the formal plan of the original house couldn't absorb without compromising it. Rather than force it, the design adds a clearly contemporary, free-standing pergola that reads as a new layer and doesn't touch the historic fabric, while original details such as a relocated timber staircase are retained. The result respects and articulates the home's heritage while making it work for contemporary living — keeping it a significant asset to Maitland's heritage fabric.
