A heritage sensitive, contemporary addition & renovation 

Newcastle’s ‘Garden Suburb Heritage Conservation Area’ is fiercely protected by council. The owners of this property had already had one Development Application rejected and were exhausted by process and the conflict between advice, design and planning legislations. By dissecting the requirements of council and the home owners, we successfully received Development Approval whilst ensuring the client did not sacrifice their primary objectives.

As a corner lot on a major road, the 1940’s home is highly visible in the streetscape requiring a sensitive approach to the proposed two story extension. The new form strongly references the original home, but is cleanly separated by a delicate, copper clad linking element. 

A new swimming pool and timber pergola provides improved amenity whilst shading from the harsh Western sun; all screened by an appropriately detailed brick fence;  providing visual and acoustic privacy from the adjacent road.

Internally, the design continues the art deco style of the existing home with curvaceous joinery elements and ornate cornaces addressing the living space.

The marrying of context, client requirements, legislation and heritage constraints has ensured a fantastic outcome for the home owners and the streetscape and council.
